Do you remember your first real hiking adventure when you were a boy? Perhaps it was with your father, grandfather, uncle, or mentor.
You had helped to plan the hike for weeks, looking at maps and trail guides, carefully planning the route. You got your gear ready: Backpack, hiking boots, walking sticks, first aid kit, and your pocket compass. You double-checked everything was ready.
You spent the first night tenting at a campsite along the trail. In the morning, you were abruptly awakened by an "up and at 'em!" only to find out the others were already dressed and ready for the big adventure. It was dark out, the sun not yet up. You scrambled out of the sleeping bag, put on your hiking boots, and slipped your backpack on. The campfire was already going and breakfast was ready. You quickly ate and then joined up with everyone else at the trail head.
The dew was fresh that morning as you started up the trail with the others. The birds were singing. You caught the occasional movement of small animals on the trail. It wasn't long before the sun rose above the horizon and started to light up the trail.
As the day went on, your hiking leader stopped and showed you how to read various trail signs. There were deer prints in the mud and raccoon prints by a nearby creek bank. You were shown how to recognize an animal by its scat. You learned how to read a compass and to use the sun and direction of shadow to help keep your bearing. You learned to truly begin to appreciate the amazing world God made for you!
At the end of the day, after a warm meal by the campfire, legs tired and feet sore, you listened to the tales of adventure being told by flickering light. Night was upon you, the stars lit up the skies like fireflies. And your smile was ear to ear!

Each Hiking Kit provides the essential materials and supplies needed for you and other men to lead up to five (5) boys through a fun-filled, activity-driven adventure! Over the suggested course of four gatherings, you'll not only teach them the fundamentals of hiking, but you will share time together learning about the biblical topic of obedience.
We've made it EASY for any man to get started! The included Game Plan will provide you with the step-by-step information necessary to help support you throughout the mentoring process. Best of all, we encourage you to invite other men (and their boys!) to share the journey with you!

MENTORING OUT OF THE BOX - HIKING includes a copy of our Hiking Leader's Guide.
The Leader's Guide provides a detailed framework for you (and any man helping you!) to plan, prepare and lead the activity-driven group meetings - we recommend at least four - with the boys you've invited. While the Leader's Guide is intended for use in Christian Service Brigade's full program, the included HIKING SUPPLEMENT explains how to maximize using the Leader's Guide for hiking with the adjusted schedule we recommend for MENTORING OUT OF THE BOX.
The Leader's Guide (and corresponding Outpost Adventure that is used by the boys) is designed to help men teach the biblical principles of Obedience. Boys are presented with fun-filled activities that teach them the basics of hiking while at the same time learning to about the importance of obedience and following directions!
MENTORING OUT OF THE BOX - HIKING was designed to be done together with other men. You don't have to do this alone! Share the journey and experience with other men: Your friends, brothers, uncles, like-minded dads, or even men of the church. You will end up having support and encouragement (and some shared commitment) throughout the mentoring adventure as you team up to mentor a group of boys
Who knows? You may end up strengthening your own relationships with the men around you as you share this Mentoring Adventure together!

MENTORING OUT OF THE BOX at its core is meant to help men lead, equip, and disciple today's boys to be able to be stronger, more capable, and more equipped as they begin their own life journey.
Look back at your own life. There were times when another man made an investment into you, helping to walk with you through life's ups and downs. He imparted knowledge and wisdom that made you stronger, better able to weather life's storms and to be more capable of living life more fully.
Now it's your time to pay it forward. Whether it's your own son, your neighbor's boys, or the boys of your church or community, they are all in need of what you have to offer. As God's Word commands us as men,
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." — Deut. 6:4-7
Just think about how a small investment of your knowledge, skills, experience, and wisdom could impact even one boy. More than that, imagine how much impact your leadership and your demonstration of godly love will have on a boy in need.
